The Graylingwell Heritage Project is a community-based heritage and arts programme that will be focusing upon the history of the Graylingwell Hospital and the people associated with it from 1894-present. The project has been developed by a partnership of local organisations; Chichester Community Development Trust, Pallant House Gallery, West Sussex Record Office and the University of Chichester. Each partner group brings specialised talents and passions to the project that will provide the structure for the community members of West Sussex to explore and discuss the many hidden histories of both the hospital and the people who have been a part of Graylingwell’s history over the years. For further details about each partner, please locate the ‘partners’ tab on the homepage.
The project will be running throughout 2014, and hosting numerous events and community related activities which you can find listed under the ‘events’ tab on the homepage. There are three main strands to the project that have been designed to run together throughout the year and result in several local heritage and arts exhibitions along with a project booklet. Each of the exhibitions will be held in April/May 2015, and the project booklet will also be launched around the same time. Each strand of the project will be run by a different partner group and geared toward their area of expertise. Pallant House Gallery will be hosting a series of community arts workshops along with hosting a specialised exhibition in April/May 2015. University of Chichester, History Department have recruited a Community Historian to lead a team of volunteers concerned with uncovering documentary and archive based evidence. The University will also be hosting a heritage and arts exhibition at the Otter Gallery during April 2015. The West Sussex Record Office will be concerned with training a specialised oral history team concerned with gathering Graylingwell related memories and anecdotes from the community. The WSRO is also involved with digitising the original patient records from the early period of the asylum. The Chichester Community Development Trust is located on-site at Graylingwell and is essentially providing a ‘home’ for the project and involved with the day to day concerns of the project.
